In this insightful adjective opposites activity, students complete Do you prefer...? questions with opposite adjectives and then talk about their preferences. First, in two groups, students complete Do you prefer...? questions with opposite adjectives. Next, students read each question and underline the adjective they prefer, e.g. 'Do you prefer wearing black clothes to white clothes?' Students then pair up with someone from the other group and take turns asking their partner each question. If their partner prefers the same adjective, the student ticks the question. In this memorable adjective opposites activity, students find adjectives in a word search and then work with a partner to match each adjective with its opposite. To begin, students find ten adjectives in a word search and write them in the 'My adjectives' column on their worksheet. Students then work with their partner and take it in turns to ask for the opposite of each adjective, e.g. 'What's the opposite of beautiful?' Their partner looks for the opposite of the adjective in their list and replies accordingly, e.g. 'The opposite of beautiful is ugly'. The two students then write the opposite adjective in the 'Adjective opposites' column. Afterwards, students make sentences using each adjective and its opposite, e.g. 'My phone was expensive, but my pen was cheap'.

Explain that Pat and Pete are two men who are opposites in every way and that one student has information about Pat and the other has information about Pete. Adjective Opposites Bingo

ESL Opposite Adjectives Game - Vocabulary: Matching - Pre-intermediate (A2) - 25 minutes

In this fun opposite adjectives game, students listen to adjectives and match them to their opposites. Call out adjectives from the caller's sheet in a random order. If students have the opposite of the adjective on their card, they cross it off. When a student has crossed off all nine adjectives, they shout 'Bingo'. The student then reads out the nine adjectives, saying both the adjective and its opposite. If the adjective opposites are correct, the student wins the round. If the student makes a mistake, the game continues. Play several rounds with students receiving a different bingo card each time. As an alternative or extension, students play the game in groups with students taking it in turns to be the bingo caller.

This useful adjective opposites worksheet and game helps students to identify and memorize common adjectives and their opposites. First, students use adjectives from a box to complete an adjective opposites list. Next, in pairs, students read adjective cards and write the opposite of the adjective on each card. Students then place the cards in a pile. One student picks up a card and reads the adjective on the card to their partner who tries to guess the opposite of the adjective. If their partner guesses correctly, the student gives them the card and moves on to the next one. If not, the card is placed at the bottom of the pile and the two students swap roles. The student with the most cards at the end wins. As an extension or variation, students play a pelmanism game with the set of adjective cards and opposite cards. Students take it in turns to turn over one card from each set. If the two adjectives match to make an adjective and its opposite, the student keeps the two cards and has another turn.
