Matching Task Types

EAP Writing Exam Preparation Activity - Reading and Speaking: Matching, Guided Discussion, Freer Practice - Pair Work - Intermediate (B1) - 20 minutes

In this engaging exam preparation activity, students are introduced to four common writing exam task types, familiarising themselves with their purpose and general structure through a matching exercise. First, students match sentence strips describing four key components common to each writing task with their corresponding task types. The four task types are explaining a process, opinion essay, problem-solution essay, and summarising data. The four key components are purpose, introduction, body, and conclusion. Next, students reflect on the activity by discussing three task-related questions in pairs. The pairs then share their responses with the class to encourage a broader classroom discussion. As an extension, students can plan a response for one of the four task types.
